'Good Wife' takes a shine to Orlando's Scott Porter

 

How well has Orlando's Scott Porter done with the juicy role of Blake on "The Good Wife"?

He's gotten all the juice out of it — and more. A character meant to be in just a few episodes will be with the CBS legal drama at least half the season. The draw for viewers: Mysterious investigator Blake constantly tries to outfox equally enigmatic competitor Kalinda (Emmy winner Archie Panjabi).

"It's the first hit I've been on," says Lake Howell High alum Porter, 31. "Most of the world is getting to see me as a villain rather than as the hero that Jason Street was," a reference to the paralyzed quarterback he played on "Friday Night Lights." Porter also acted on the canceled " Caprica." He talked to Boedeker last week:

How do you see the conflict between Blake and Kalinda?

It's fun. There's a line Blake says to Kalinda, "You think I'm your competition." He works in an investigator's role, but what is he with this law film? He and Kalinda both have huge holes in their pasts. I think that's what drives them, to figure out who the other person is, and to get under each other's skin.

How do you describe your chemistry with Panjabi?

We call it sexy hostile. We did a photo shoot for Entertainment Weekly and said that's what the picture should look like. You don't know if these two will murder each other or end up in bed with each other. We decided long ago to avoid the trap of having these two characters fall for each other. I look at Kalinda as a praying mantis. I'm trying to keep Blake away from that danger. Kalinda had love interests in the first season. None of them panned out. We wanted to play against that.

Will we learn more about Blake in coming weeks or will he remain mysterious?

The interesting connection is between the Josh Charles character [top lawyer Will Gardner] and Blake. How does Blake fit into machine? Who is he working for? What are his real motives? We'll find out more about his past as we will Kalinda's. They'll start ratting each other out. It will become a bit violent in terms of their trying to destroy each other's career. He doesn't shy away from making a mess and being a somewhat confused vigilante. He goes out and does terrible things in the name of lawsuits. He's a little violent and not all right in his head. Something in his past made him aggressive. He and Kalinda are both aggressive. Her style is more sexual. His is more violent.

How do you describe the character?

Fiercely private, extremely competitive, huge amounts of aggression in him. He's also intelligent. He knows how to operate in any room.

What was the original plan for you on the show and how did it change?

Two episodes originally. They originally offered the role to an older actor. They switched gears and brought me in after they hired Michael Ealy [as top lawyer Derrick Bond]. The network kind of recoiled and said they didn't know if I'd work out. It just took off. I just finished the12th episode. It's like the longest audition ever. We've created a monster. I'll probably be in 15, at least. I have three more episodes to work in. I'm already in for over half the season.

Is there any chance you'll be a regular?

It's not something we've discussed yet. The fever that's building will break, and a flood of information will come out. I don't know if Blake can survive. To do the story line justice, there has to be a fatality of some sort, whether it's career-wise or physically. When the dust settles, there can only be one Blake or one Kalinda, I'm just having a fun time trying to figure out who will be left.

How does being on "The Good Wife" compare to "Friday Night Lights"?

They're both extremely intelligent shows. They don't speak down to the viewer. They allow viewers to come to their own conclusions about characters. I've been on nothing but good television. I was on "Caprica," too. I think there was a miss there in marketing. People who stuck around saw some smart writing.

What is it like working on "The Good Wife" set?

It rivals what we had on "Friday Night Lights" — eight kids unknown to the world and everyone is working now. These people [on "The Good Wife"] have been working years and years, and they're so good at what they do. I just learn. Josh [Charles] is an amazing person. We hang out and talk. Julianna [Margulies] and Christine [Baranski] are gracious. This cast knows what they're doing. You have to step it up.

What about your look on the show?

They made me shave for the first couple of episodes. I wanted to fight against it. I grew some scruff. We figured out Blake would give the middle finger to an office of lawyers. He's really good at what he does. He won't fit into a dress code. Blake has a bit of a problem with authority. This is my natural hair color. This is how I look when I'm not working. When I'm not working I have a tendency not to shave, I don't do much with the hair because I'm a guy. They're letting me bring what I look like on a normal basis to the show.
